Compassion, Dignity, and Responsible Resolution
At the National Tax Lien Association, we often emphasize that the tax lien and tax deed industry is ultimately connected to communities and people. Behind every property is a real-life situation, and many industry professionals work hard to find solutions that balance tax enforcement with compassion and responsibility.
Recently, an NTLA member shared the story of an elderly couple facing property tax foreclosure after no longer being able to afford their home. Rather than rushing the process, the member worked closely with the family to create a more stable and dignified transition.
The eviction process was delayed to allow the couple time to secure suitable housing. Assistance was also provided to help cover several months of rent and a security deposit so they could move into a safer and more affordable living situation.
During this already difficult time, the wife sadly passed away before the property sold. Additional assistance was provided to help the surviving husband cover funeral expenses.
When the property was ultimately sold, the member was able to recover the amounts advanced while ensuring that the majority of the remaining proceeds — several hundred thousand dollars — were returned to the homeowner. The husband now has stable housing and financial resources to support himself moving forward. Additionally, the property has now returned to the municipality’s active tax rolls, benefiting the broader community as well.
The family later shared the following message:
“On behalf of the Shivers family, we truly want to thank you for all you have done for us through the tough times. I truly thank God for you. This situation could’ve been really bad, but by his grace and your compassion, you got us through.”
Stories like this are an important reminder that responsible tax lien and tax deed professionals are often working to create practical, compassionate outcomes during financially difficult situations.
While not every case has the same resolution, many professionals within the industry actively seek ways to help homeowners navigate hardship with dignity whenever possible.
